Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds released the third single from forthcoming album 'Council Skies' on 24th March 2023. Noel himself has described the song as 'one of my favourite I have ever written'
The song is a rather somber affair, complete with strings and led by an acoustic guitar and a piano, it seems to be a very personal song for Noel, and see's him look inward which is not always common for him.
The song actually started out very differently though. Noel himself said
"Well actually, funnily enough, so when I go to Argentina, I stay in this one specific hotel, and Argentinian fans are, hands down, the greatest in the world… I get loads of kids, they stay outside this hotel 24 hours a day, and they take it in shifts, and the night shift always bring their guitars. And I remember one night, the last night I was there, I couldn’t sleep, jet lag or something… and they were playing Oasis and High Flying Birds songs in the car park, and they were all getting the words wrong, and I’m sitting there having a drink going, ‘That’s not the right words’, and that song started about me writing a song about it”.
One of those lines actually still makes the song ‘I’m going to write you a song, it won’t take me long, and you can change all the words, but you’ll still get them wrong.’
Noel seems to be going through some personal difficulties at the moment, and has said himself that this album is a byproduct of the pandemic and lockdowns, so I suppose a more somber nature was to be expected.
It is a truly beautiful piece of music though, very atmospheric, and it sounds like Noel bringing a chapter to a close....
Make of that what you will
