"Fans" is the second single from Kings of Leon third studio album "Because of the Times" and has gone on to become of the bands most well loved songs. It's a song that addresses the bands relationship with their audience, and in particular the audiences in the UK. In the early days, while they were still struggling to break through in the U.S., Kings of Leon found themselves embraced by audiences across the U.K. Their raw energy, Southern-tinged rock, and rebellious spirit resonated with British fans in a way that gave the band a sense of identity. By the time Because of the Times was released, the U.K. had become a second home for the band, with a dedicated fanbase that fueled their rise and motivated them to create music for massive venues.
The lyrics of “Fans” are a celebration of British youth culture and the indie music scene of the mid-2000s. With lines like “All of London sing / 'Cause England swings and they sure love the tales I bring,” the song acknowledges the synergy between the band and their English fans, as well as the iconic music scene that nurtured them. British fans didn’t just listen to Kings of Leon; they celebrated their gritty Southern style, creating an electric vibe at concerts and helping to solidify the band’s status in the U.K.
Sonically, “Fans” carries an upbeat, almost celebratory energy that contrasts with some of the more somber or introspective tracks on Because of the Times. The song’s driving rhythm and infectious chorus make it instantly memorable, and the guitar work is an homage to British rock’s influence on the band’s sound. Clearly influenced by what was going on around them at that time, with bands such as Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys.
Kings of Leon released Because of the Times just before they truly exploded onto the mainstream stage with their next album, Only by the Night, which included hits like “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody.” In many ways, “Fans” represents a moment of transition, where the band was moving from gritty rock clubs to massive arenas. It’s a snapshot of the band as they prepared to take on the world but hadn’t yet lost the intimate connection with their core audience.
“Fans” remains a fan-favorite track in the Kings of Leon discography. Its anthemic quality makes it a natural fit for live performances, and it’s a song that British audiences, in particular, hold close to their hearts. It’s a reminder of the mutual love and support that fueled the band’s early success.
The song is still a main stay in the bands setlist, despite being released 17 years ago. It's one of those songs that I imagine will be in the setlist for a very long time. Especially in their UK shows. The song for those that were there at the start, when America hadn't quite understood them England quickly adopted them.
