The 1975 are a weird one! Some love them some loathe them. Some used to loathe them, and now love them (Yes I'm looking at you NME!)
I feel as if they deserve status as one of my musical icons though. They have been a huge part of my listening habits, over this year. Especially after releasing their latest album 'Being Funny in a Foreign Language.'
The album seemed to highlight two things for me, firstly The 1975 are a band operating at the peak of their powers, and secondly they don't care anymore! I mean that in the best possible way, they are open to experiment with new ideas and different sounds.
I can't discredit previous releases though, they are a band that have really diversified their sound, of course they write anthems, 'Give Yourself a Try', 'If You're to Shy Let me Know' etc but they are inclined to write punk songs 'People', slow acoustic Radiohead like ballads 'I Always Wanna Die Sometimes' and even synth pop classics 'The Sound' they have matured, grown and experimented with each albums release becoming one of the worlds biggest bands.
Watching their set at Reading Festival this year was the catalyst for me. I delved deeper into their large discography, and I was honestly blown away, they are doing things that other bands are simply not doing.
For those reasons, they deserve a place on my list of musical icons.
Thank you for reading x
