Musical Icon: Johnny Marr

This musical icon has been around since 1983 where along with a certain Stephen Patrick Morrissey he burst onto the scene with The Smiths. However there is plenty more to this man than The Smiths.
But it’s always best to start at the beginning. Johnny Marr was the lead guitarist and co songwriter, of The Smiths. One of the biggest and best Indie bands to ever come out of the U.K. Helping to write and record some of the best indie songs ever including ‘This Charming Man’ , ‘How Soon Is Now’ and ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’. His unique style of playing the guitar helped The Smiths as it became a distinctive point of the bands sound. There is no one quite like Johnny Marr! In 1987 The Smiths sadly came to an end. Due to personal differences and a disagreement between Marr and Morrissey.
Johnny Marr has kept himself busy in that time however. He became a member all but briefly of The Pretenders. Performing with them live and playing on a couple of singles. He then performed for another Manchester band The The with a friend Matt Johnson. Performing with the band until 1994. As well as performing with The The, he decided to form a supergroup with New Orders Bernard Sumner.
Into the 2000s he performed with American band Modest Mouse for a few years (2006-2009) before heading back across the pond to write and record with British band The Cribs playing with them live and recording an album.
Since his departure from The Cribs Johnny Marr has embarked on a solo career releasing three albums and even took the time to write a book ‘Set the Boy Free’
Johnny is a musical icon because he’s continued to push boundaries and work with the best people in the industry, he does not simply look back to the arsenal of brilliant songs he’s recorded and written in the past. He’s always concerned with the future, and creating new music.
