Worth the Wait

Today is the day…

Excuse the pun, but today (January 5th 2024) we got to hear the first song from Liam Gallagher and John Squires collaboration. So was it worth the wait?

The lead singer of one of Britain’s biggest bands, and the guitarist of one of Britains most important and pivotal bands, working together on a tune. The possibilities are endless and the expectations always going to be high.

I’m afraid at least in my opinion the track doesn’t live up to those high expectations. It was probably never going to.

Let’s start with the good bits, the guitar riff. It’s a John Squire classic, without knowing he was involved. You’d be able to tell instantly who’s playing the guitar. With nods to The Stone Roses, and even further back to the 60s there’s a real Jimi Hendrix and Beatles vibe.

Liams in good voice too. It reminds me a lot of his 90s vocals, after receiving criticism for some vocals, it’s refreshing to hear Liam’s voice sound good again.

Onto to my criticisms, the drums sound rather tinny, I’m really not a fan at how they’ve been produced. They don’t feel authentic. A part of me thinks they’ve been added in after the other parts.

Second, the lyrics! They’re awful. It’s a real basic affair. With the middle part of the song bordering on child like. Liam is almost singing a Nursery Rhyme. It’s a song that had so much potential, being the lead single for this project and those lyrics, have put a real halt to the momentum. Gallagher and Squire were trying to generate.

Away from the nursery rhyme mid section, the chorus is a repeated rhyme, which isn’t much better. I wasn’t expecting Morrissey levels of literature, or even Jarvis Cockers social observation. But surely they can do better than this.

May I remind you, of the songs these two have played and sung on. I rest my case.

I haven’t given up hope on this project completely. Hopefully the future songs are better, and they’ve just stumbled out of the blocks a little. Let me know what you think.
