John Lennon

I usually come up with a snappy, quick, witty title for the posts on this page. But it would be wrong of me to try and summarise John Lennon with a funny quip.

Today (December 8th 2023) marks 43 years since John’s death. A life suddenly taken at the age of 40, by a gunman’s bullet.

Lennon was always the most complex of the Beatles, a brilliant songwriter and singer, but always wanting something more. He became an activist, mentor, father, collaborator and so much more.

He had his flaws and they have been documented by people a lot more qualified than me. By no means was he an angel, but who is.

I find it quite astonishing what he managed to achieve in his short life. He formed the greatest song writing duo of all time. Him and McCartney wrote some of the most iconic songs of all time, and in my opinion they’ve never been bettered. He was part of the biggest and most important band in the world. His solo career flourished and gave us classic songs like ‘Imagine’ which presents a utopia that I think even the most cynical person can get behind.

It was a life lived to the fullest, filled with music, art and activism.

Brought to an end on December 8th 1980. Lennon’s life is celebrated and his death still talked about today. It is one of the most shocking and significant events of the 20th century. The poster boy of the 60s and the activist hero of the early 70s shot dead by a so called fan.

I don’t feel that I can say anything else that hasn’t already been said a million and one times. I’m off to listen to those songs, which is what she should remember the great man for.
