I’ve Got to be the Perfect Me

Blossoms have released the third single from their upcoming fifth album ‘Gary’. Where the previous two singles featured collaborations and tales about stolen Gorillas.

This song has a more traditional feeling. The band came up with this song, just as they would in the old days. By jamming in the rehearsal room. It can be felt. When listening to it, this song sounds like the five of the band having fun.

The band revealed in an interview that the song nearly didn’t make the record.

Speaking about the driving, anthemic number on BBC Radio 1 on (July 23), drummer Joe Donovan explained: “It nearly didn’t make the album, and now full circle – it’s a single.”Frontman Tom Ogden added: “You do that sometimes – you write a lot of songs for a record, and you kind of put some on the back burner; you come back with [a] fresh perspective. And this one rose to the top like bubbles.”

Out of the songs released from ‘Gary’ so far this one is my favourite. It feels like a culmination of everything Blossoms have done so far. It could fit on any the previous four albums. The drums feel like the first album, that acoustic guitar feels like it could fit on ‘Ribbon Around the Bomb’ the lyrics are straight from the ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ note book, and the synth backing well ‘Cool Like You’ is still there in the bands sound.

Blossoms are a band comfortable with the music they make. Constantly trying new ideas but never afraid to look back on the journey that got them to where they are today. The band have always worn their influences on there sleeves and this song is no different.

‘Perfect Me’ is “a subconscious nod to ABBA, Springsteen and The Killers. While I wanted the lyrics to reflect a pursuit of perfection, which doesn’t exist.“

Can’t wait for you to hear the rest of the album! Tom, Joe, Myles, Chaz & Josh X.”

It's one of the very best Blossoms singles to date. I too am very excited to hear the rest of the album. The songs we've heard so far have been brilliant, and I've got very high hopes for the rest of the record.
