The Jam When You’re Young
When You’re Young was the 8th single by British band The Jam, it does not feature on any of the bands studio albums yet it has become a favourite amongst fans of the band.
It’s sound is very typical of the band, and I mean that in the best way possible. It takes all of the elements that make the band great. Brilliant drumming from Rick Buckler, a perfect melodic bass line from Bruce Foxton and snarling guitar and vocal from Paul Weller.
The song is the story of life. It’s about wanting to grow up, written from the perspective of someone telling a child or teenager. Life is great when you’re young. The reality of being a grown up, is different to the dreams we have as children. Life can become mundane, difficult and stressful. The world can prove to be a scary place. So Paul Weller tells us to enjoy life through the brilliant metaphor. ‘Life is a drink and you get drunk when you’re young.’
