Suck it & See is the 4th album released by Arctic Monkeys sandwiched in between ‘Humbug’ the weird experimental one and ‘AM’ the album that made them Bonafede rock gods. It often gets overlooked within the band’s discography.
However it’s my favourite album of the band, it’s 12 brilliant songs, some of which have gone on to become classics and others which have flown under the radar. Tracks like ‘Brick by Brick’ and ‘Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ have become live staples, but tracks like ‘She Thunderstorms’ and ‘Reckless Serenade’ have almost disappeared but they are some of the bands best work, and some of Alex’s best lyrics.
Where ‘AM’ is a great rock album and ‘Humbug’ is experimental, ‘Suck it & See’ is a great pop album. It’s got songs about love, lust, escapism, romance, tragedy. Songs like ‘Love is a Laserquest’ and ‘Piledriver Waltz’ are two examples of the brilliant pop songwriting.
It’s an album that gets overlooked, and an album that definitely deserves more credit. So go on ‘go for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel, take a can of dandelion and burdock.’ And enjoy
Don’t forget your ‘comfortable shoes’
