The Story of The Universal
Blur are one of Britain’s most well loved and critically acclaimed bands, from Parklife to Song 2 they have released tracks to soundtrack generations.
The track in question is from the bands 4th album ‘The Great Escape’ an album Damon Albarn famously doesn’t like. However although it may not match up to its predecessor ‘Parklife’ it did contain an absolute classic single ‘The Universal’ a song about belief and denial. We believe that tomorrow could be ‘our lucky day’ when in reality that is highly unlikely. It is said Damon took inspiration from the ‘National Lottery’ when writing the lyrics for this song. We as human beings long and dream for different things and sometimes our actions and ideas are fuelled by those dreams. Which can work to our detriment.
The song itself is an anthem and is used to end Blur shows, with a powerful chorus and strings throughout. It’s the final call in Blurs Britpop chapter and in my opinion the best song the band ever recorded.
Thank you for reading For Damon, Graham, Alex and Dave
