The Cranberries Dreams
‘Dreams’ is the debut single Irish band The Cranberries, the song was originally released in September 1992 and after not making much of an impact the band re released the track on their debut album ‘Everyone Else is Doing it, So Why Can’t We’ in 1993 and it reached the top 30 in 1994.
The song talks about love and how a specific person can make you feel. Dolores O'Riordan was only 20 when she wrote the song, and has stated since that it’s about her first love in Limerick, and how that person made her feel.
Since her death in 2018 the song has taken on a different meaning for many fans of the band, as well as being one of their most well known pieces of music, ‘Dreams’ holds the accolade of being The Cranberries first single and has therefore become a cornerstone of there discography along with ‘Zombie’ and ‘Linger’
‘Dreams’ has also seen use in ‘Derry Girls’ a comedy about four girls and one boys childhood in Derry during the 90s still at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The song is played at the end credits, and is used beautifully at the end of Season One, where Lisa McGee (the shows writer) juxtaposes two very different scenes side by side.
At the end of Season Three the song is also used to great effect to highlight the importance of 'The Good Friday Agreement' especially for young people in Northern Ireland
The song has become a well loved song, and is instantly recognisable. Mainly down to Dolores distinct and beautiful voice. A true 90s classic!
