The Police, Every Breath You Take.
‘Every Breath You Take’ is the first single from The Police 1983 album ‘Synchronicity.’ The song also was named single of the year in the same year and has gone on to be one of the most recognisable songs ever.
The song itself is about an obsessed lover, not a stalker as many people believe. Sting wrote the song after his separation from his first wife Frances Tomeltly and the beginning of his new relationship with Trudie Styler. An affair had been happening for a while and Trudie also happened to be Frances best friend. Making an already very complex situation even more difficult.
‘Every Breath You Take’ was a very personal song to Sting, however it went on to become the bands most universal song, and propelled them to being the biggest band in the world. Although it was only for a short period of time, in 1983 The Police were comfortably the biggest band in the world and it was mostly down to the power of this track.
