As I sit and write this post, Jamie T is on stage  in Finsbury Park, playing the biggest gig of his career. Touring his latest brilliant album ‘The Theory of Whatever.’

So it seems a fitting moment to talk about, what I believe is his best song. ‘Sticks & Stones’ an indie disco classic, and a live staple in his live shows.

However the song is so much more than that. It’s one of the best songs of the 00’s and a brilliant tale of friendship. Between two young lads. It’s so relatable, and that’s what makes it brilliant. The listener can relate to the lyrics.

From being called ‘A Lightweight Prick’ at a train station. After one too many on a night out. (We’ve all done it! And I’ve definitely been on the receiving end of a few lightweight comments)

Throughout the song, Jamie catalogues a series of people, from drug addicts in ‘Fee’ to those who made it. A well paying job (stockbroker) with a family and kids. In ‘Danny’

Taking stock of what he and his friends have become. Evoking memories. He can’t quite decide if times are better or worse now than what they were. There were good times and bad times.

Each character has their own story and version of events. Again it’s something that we can all relate to, every friendship and friendship group goes through the good times and the bad. It’s the nature of life. Whether that’s breakups, falling out, bereavement, addiction, or even just growing up and growing apart. But even when times get bad, there’s always an overriding hope present.

‘Pat on my back and a swig on my brew. You’re still my friend it’s impossible to hate you!
From cradle to the grave, we always misbehave, people latch us down and rain on our parade.’
Girls we love leave when we want them to stay. Like today remember what shall we say. When there’s no one left to fight boys like us don’t shine so bright. Soon as I see the dust settle, let’s go out and find some trouble!’

Jamie T managed to put that into an indie song, and it became a classic.
The lyrics above are perfect, no matter what happens, and what life throws at you, you’ll always have your mates

So Thanks Jamie T
