‘Promised Land’ is the second song on the debut album ‘All Change’ by Liverpool band ‘Cast.’
A band I often thing are underrated and perhaps overshadowed by another band. (The La’s)
Cast formed in 1992 after the breakup and demise of The La’s. Bass player ‘John Power’ decided to form a new group, named after the last word ever sung by The La’s.
It would take them until 1995 to release a debut album, featuring the singles ‘Walkaway’ and ‘Alright’
In this post I want to talk about ‘Promised Land’ it has become one of my favourite Britpop songs recently. I love the lyrics, and melody. It takes elements of American alternative rock, Britpop and all of the great Liverpool bands before them. The Beatles, The La’s, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes etc and creates a snarling yet melodic song.
‘Promised Land’ seems to talk about this mythical place that we are striving for. Whether that be an improvement on a current situation , or a new start completely. It talks about escapism and always striving for more. However not always reaching the goal or destination we have set for ourselves. Something universal to us all.
Thank you for reading x
