Are they Britains Best New Band?

Aurora Nishevci, Abigail Morris, Lizzie Mayland, Emily Robert’s,  Georgia Davis,

The Last Dinner Party.

Bursting onto the scene in Spring 2023, with one of the best debut singles in recent memory. ‘Nothing Matters’ the sound of 70s, and 00s indie combine. It’s ABBA, Bowie and Franz Ferdinand. With a chorus so catchy and vocals delivered beautifully. It’s an atmospheric, ambient, anthem.

Following that was always going to be a hard fete, but the band managed it. ‘Sinner’ followed ‘Nothing Matters’ a very different approach, a piano led beginning that grows into a modern indie gem. With some Blur like guitars littering the track.
All of the band take turns to sing on the track and having these vocals throughout, makes the song bigger, bolder and brasher. Two singles in and we’ve already got a band operating at the highest level.

‘My Lady of Mercy’ and ‘Caesar on the TV Screen’ followed, and these proved that this wasn’t some sort of blip. The Last Dinner Party were not a flash in the pan act. They had made an impact and were only getting started.

‘My Lady of Mercy’ is a love letter to the 70s by way of Florence & the Machine. A real rhythmic attack, that hits listeners right in the face. It’s decadent, dark and delightful. ‘Caesar on the TV Screen’ is another ambient affair. Starting as a slow burner, but turns into a real pop gem. With some of the best lyrics that the band have written to date.

As I sit and write this post, it’s February 2nd 2024 a significant day in the history of The Last Dinner Party. It’s the day that the band released their debut album. ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’

12 songs and 41 minutes of brilliant music. A real album for the ages, the singles were good but this album elevates things. ‘Burn Alive’ is a real gem. Full of reverb, and pulsating drums. It’s the sound of a band confident in themselves and extremely proud of the music they are making. They dial things down too, especially on ‘Beautiful Boy’ complete with its own Panpipe Solo, and delicate vocals.

This is a very good record, and it’s come from a very talented group of musicians. Britain may just have its best new band.

A band who aren’t afraid to explore and break down boundaries, both with the music they make and as themselves. It’s refreshing to see to see a band like The Last Dinner Party.

From writing pop gems to embracing their members heritage on tracks like ‘Gjuha.’ It’s hard to look at these five women and be anything but impressed.

This is not a coming of age record, this is not the sound of a band finding their feet. This is the sound of a band who know where they are heading, and this is the first rung on that ladder to the top.
