Young Fathers, formed in Edinburgh in 2008 and have released four studio albums. 'Dead' in 2014, a follow up in 2015 'White Men are Black Too', 'Cocoa Sugar' in 2018 and there most recent effort 'Heavy Heavy' this year (2023). Critically the band have recieved much acclaim, debut album 'Dead' went on to win the much coveted Mercury Prize in 2014. However they do not seem to have connected as well with the public.
Musicians and creatives seem to love them. Danny Boyle chose them to have six tracks on T2, the Trainspotting Sequel, including 'Only God Knows' a song that the band wrote specifically for the film. Noel Gallagher is also a huge fan, he has proclaimed his love for the band in many interviews and TV/Radio Appearances including on Later with Jools Holland.
The bands most recent effort 'Heavy Heavy' is in my opinion there best work to date. A groundbreaking piece of work that combines genres, and styles effortlessly. Full of passion and soul that creates mesmerising pieces of music. It transcends a particular style or scene, it is a celebration of all forms of music soul, pop, rock, hip-hop, noise they all fit together to complete the puzzle that is 'Heavy Heavy'
The songs are both brilliant pieces of pop music but also important messages. 'Rice' tackles goldminers who are destroying natural resources in Africa and the people who are forced into this form of labour. It's an important subject to the band they manage to tell the world what is going on in a song that is 2 and a half minutes long.
This record is a short one, it doesn't waste any time. Coming and going in just 32 minutes but it's impact will stay with the listener for a long time. I cannot describe what the experience is like because it is different for everyone. What I can say however it is unlike any album I have ever heard before. The first time I heard it I was blown away and I still continue to be blown a way.
There is no other band like Young Fathers, and 'Heavy Heavy' is an anthemic groundbreaking collection of brilliant songs.
