February 8th 2022. The 02 Arena, London. It’s the Brit Awards, easily the biggest night in British music, with many amazing musicians competing for the awards. Over the last few years the Brits has come under scrutiny and many believe it isn’t what it used to be.
This year however I feel as if there were a number of big talking points, especially when it comes to music that I enjoy listening to, the indie, alternative genre.
Firstly there was an award for that. Best Rock & Alternative Act. With the nominees being ‘Coldplay’, ‘Sam Fender’, ‘Wolf Alice’, ‘Tom Grennan’ and ‘Glass Animals’.
It was the first time since 2006 that the Brits had an award dedicated to this type of music. The award was won by ‘Sam Fender’ and rightfully so in my opinion. Sam has had an unbelievable year, releasing his second album ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and playing countless festivals, he’s managed to propel guitar music back up the charts. Sam was also nominated for ‘Artist and Album of the Year’ on the same night and some argue he was unlucky to not win at least one of those.
The biggest shock of the night. (Well for some people) was the winner of ‘British Group’ in a category that had the pop giants ‘Little Mix’ one of the biggest bands in the world ‘Coldplay’ as well as ‘London Grammar’ and ‘D Block Europe’ the award was taken home by ‘Wolf Alice’. Again rightfully deserved in my opinion. The bands album ‘Blue Weekend’ is a masterpiece and was my album of 2021 along with many other peoples.
It was a huge win for the boys and girls in the band. With Liam Gallagher also making a well received appearance, it highlighted that the Brits isn’t just a red carpet show, sound tracked by Tik Tok songs. Oh and that Alex Turner was right in 2014. That Rock n Roll will never die
