The 1975: Being Funny in a Foreign Language

The latest offering by the Manchester band is next up for review.

Side A opens with 'The 1975' as with every other album released by the band up until this point. This version of the track is the best in my opinion. With nods to 'All My Friends' by LCD Soundsystem in its keyboards. The song acts as almost like a status update, providing insight to the world the album was being made in. A perfect album opener. 'Happiness' is the next track and its the band at their poppy best. Its a super catchy song, and that's what this record is full off. Where the bands previous two efforts saw them experiment and explore, 'Being Funny in a Foreign Language' is them at their very best. 'Looking for Somebody to Love' is Matty Healy attempting to be Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates and its brilliant, it really showcases Matty as a lyricist one of his under appreciated skills. 'Part of the Band' sees Matty write down some of his best lines to date, 'Am I ironically woke? The butt of my joke? Or am I just some post-coke, average, skinny bloke calling his ego imagination? His self deprecating humor really shines not only on this track but the album as a whole. 'Oh Caroline' ends Side A and again its another catchy pop song, it does nothing particularly groundbreaking but it doesn't need to. Sometimes a singalong chorus, is all you need and this song certainly has that.

Side B opens with 'I'm in Love With You' one of the albums singles. It is easy to see why this song was a single. Again it's very catchy. It's also quite unique for The 1975, it's very to the point. Matty Healy is in love, and he's telling us in a very simple yet direct way. 'All I Need to Hear' slows things down but still manages to be a masterful piece of songwriting, straight from the The 1975 songbook. 'Wintering' is almost like a Christmas song that channels what happens at family gatherings, the band themselves have compared it to looking back at family photos. 'About You' is almost a follow up to 'Robbers' especially musically and it's easy to see why it has become a fan favourite. 'Human Too' is probably the records weakest track and see's the band try to be empathic, it isn't a bad song, but I think it's the weakest on the album. The concept of the track however is a brilliant idea for a song. 'When We Are Together' ends Side B the band saw it as the natural end of the record, it's a full stop. The band see it as the end of the series, the end of season 5!
