Foals: Life is Yours

Foals: Life is Yours

Foals 7th studio album seems them embrace new sounds and a different direction. Now as a three piece, and after lockdowns and cold winters. This will be the album to soundtrack a vibrant summer.

Side A opens with the title track ‘Life is Yours’ and sees the band embrace a dance like groove. With a funky bassline, and layered synths a far cry from what we are used to. ‘Wake me Up’ is the albums second track, and the first single. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the album and one of the strongest too. The lyrics in this song are really standout for me and I think it’s some of Yannis’s best work. ‘2am’ is the third track and another single. It takes us to those nights out. Where everything seems to have gone wrong yet you’re still having the best time. ‘2001’ is the fourth track on Side A and transports us to a mythical place or a mythical time where everything that’s going on seems brilliant fuelled by those illicit substances ‘a sugar rush’ and a ‘violet high.’ ‘Flutter’ ends Side A and let’s us take a breather from the Dancefloor and collect our thoughts. It’s still a grooved based track but it slows things down a little, it reminds me a lot of Bloc Party in places. A hidden gem

Side B opens with ‘Looking High’ another of my favourites. I can see this track becoming a live staple too. It’s groovy infectious beat and singalong nature. Make it a festival classic. The lyrics aren’t the most complex but it works brilliantly. ‘Under the Radar’ is another hidden gem, it’s a little bit heavier, than the other tracks on the album. With the drums being the driving force. ‘Crest of the Wave’ has a very Balearic sound, guitar music you can dance too, it’s the perfect soundtrack to those summer evenings, on the beach, in a festival field, in the pub, wherever the night may take you. ‘The Sound’ is a real dance heavy track with elements of LCD Soundsystem sprinkled throughout. A brilliant riff, and pulsating synths and drums, create a brilliant dance song. It’s as far from ‘What Went Down’ as we are likely to see Foals go. ‘Wild Green’ sounds like you are coming towards the end of the night. Wondering whether you should head home or see where else the night may take you. It will be an indie disco classic for years to come.

After talk of a break up, Foals decided to give us a party. This is a band that are still peaking so let’s enjoy the night out with them!
